50% of the U.S. Workforce will retire within the next 20 years. These new retirees, known as "baby boomers", will then no longer pay taxes into the U.S. Social Security system. Instead, they will become beneficiaries who withdraw money, and benefits, out of the System. Moreover, by girth of their numbers and the accounting structure upon which Social Security is based ( i.e. "cash-basis" vs. "accrual"), our "baby-boomers" will inadvertently cause an insolvency crisis in Social Security, leaving the government to do 1 of 2 things: either overburden those left working with considerably higher taxes just to meet Social Security's obligations to the new "baby boomer" beneficiaries; or more realistically, find an alternative funding solution that keeps the system solvent. Although the latter option is more consistent with our Country's heritage of free-market solutions, it will require finding more new workers to introduce into the U.S. workplace than will be domestically available. In other words, the U.S. does not (and will not) have enough native-born workers to fill all the jobs left open by these soon-to-be retiring baby boomers (let alone the new jobs growth fueled by their consumption). Significantly, the productivity of our "baby-boomers" is vital if we expect stability to continue upon the generational cornerstone of our Country's domestic policy--namely, the Social Security system.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke estimates that current immigration flows will need to increase three fold over current levels to adequately replace retiring baby boomers.
